Yorkie Food

Following is a page on Yorkie food, what to give them and what not to give them. Let's start with what NOT to give them under any circumstance.

Chocolate: There is an xanthine compound known as theobromine found in chocolate. Theobromine is poisonous for dogs. Unsweetened baking chocolate has six times more theobromine than milk chocolate. Also, if you have a garden, do not use cocoa bean mulch as it also contains theobromine. Many dogs find the scent of cocoa bean mulch irresistible, so don't even use it as there is always a chance that your little friend could get out.

Grapes and raisins:  They can be fatal for your Yorkie. They have been known to cause fatal kidney failure. The exact toxin found in grapes and raisins is still unknown. The first symptom of illness is vomiting, which can then lead to fatal kidney failure.

Sugar free candy and gums:  These contain xylitol. Consumption can result in a rapid drop in blood sugar resulting in a loss of coordination, depression, and seizures.

Feeding your Yorkie fatty foods such as chicken skin or ham fat can overwhelm their little pancreas. This would result in stomach pain, and vomiting. Avoid fatty foods altogether.

Nuts are another thing to avoid. Nuts have a high phosphorus content which can render your Yorkie with temporary rear leg paralysis.

Raw eggs

Any type of cat food due to its high amount of protein, sugar, and fat.

Dairy products such as milk and cheese.

Cooked bones can splinter and cause severe damage. I do not feed my little Yorkies bones of any sort, whether cooked or uncooked to remain on the safe side.

Like humans, excessive salt is not a good thing. Removal of this from their diet is key.

There are certainly other things to avoid as Yorkie food. Please contribute to this page with your input using the simple to use form below.

Now let's move on to Yorkie food that is safe

Kibble is of absolute paramount importance for your Yorkie, and for a few good reasons. Obviously a good kibble will offer a balanced diet for your Yorkie. Also, Yorkies are prone to tooth decay. Giving them wet food all the time will certainly facilitate this. If  you are going to give them wet food often, be sure to brush their teeth. See section on Yorkie Grooming which explains how to do this.

Again, this only scratches the surface. If you have some valuable input, by all means, please contribute using the form below, we would love to hear from you.
