Common Yorkie Health Problems
If you now have or are considering getting a Yorkie, then you should be aware of common Yorkie health problems.
Here are some common Yorkie Health Issues:
Tracheal Collapse - You may click on this link to read my article about this condition.
Patella Luxation - (Knee caps slipping out of place) - This occurs in older Yorkies, and generally speaking, is hereditary and can be corrected with surgery.
Pancreatitis - This is caused by too much fat in their diet. Inflammation of the Pancreas can result in a slow painful death of your special friend. It is best to remove ALL fat from their diet.
Bacterial Infections - such as GHE which cause severe diarrhea, to Campylobacteriosis which live in the digestive tract causing similar symptoms.
Allergies - Ironically, Yorkies tend to suffer from allergies even though they tend to make good pets for people who are allergy sufferers. One well known allergen for them is anesthesia. Other known allergens are food, pollen, fleas, and even cleaning products used in the home. Allergy assessment can be made by your Veterinarian.
If you know of other conditions affecting Yorkies, please use the form on this page to add your knowledge.
